The vibrant melodies and pulsating rhythms of Cameroon have long captivated audiences worldwide, however, the music industry, like many others, faces challenges that hinder its potential to reach even greater heights, global reach and recognition. To address these challenges and empower Cameroonian artists, the CIMFEST (Cameroon International Music Festival) Music Hackathon took center stage, igniting a whirlwind of innovation, collaboration, and creative problem-solving.

Held from November 12th to 14th under the theme “Hacking Technology-Enabled Solutions to Accelerate Music Promotion, Marketing, and Exportation,” the hackathon brought together an ensemble of 12 diverse teams of developers, musicians, industry experts, and passionate individuals united by a shared vision: to transform the Cameroonian music landscape into a global force.

Over the course of 48 hours, these creative minds embarked on a journey of innovation, crafting groundbreaking solutions that not only addressed immediate needs but also envisioned a future where Cameroonian music resonates across the globe.

With unwavering determination, the hackathon participants boldly confronted the challenges that have long hindered the growth of Cameroonian music, such as limited promotion opportunities, the absence of centralized platforms for artists to showcase their work, and the lack of data-driven insights to guide their music production and promotion strategies.

The event Kicked off with a keynote speech from the Divisional Officer of Buea, Abba Abduramman, followed by an insightful panel discussion with Industry experts, which gave participants a broader perspective as to what was expected of them by the end of the 48 hours music hackathon.

The hackathon was not merely an exercise in idea generation; it was a symphony of collaboration, mentorship and Invaluable masterclasses. Experienced mentors, akin to seasoned musicians guiding aspiring prodigies, provided vital expertise and support, steering teams towards the right notes and harmonies, ensuring that their ideas resonated with impact and feasibility.

The atmosphere of collaboration was palpable, with teams actively seeking feedback from peers and mentors. Their collective wisdom blended to create solutions that were more comprehensive and well-rounded than any single team could have achieved alone. It was a testament to the power of shared passion and collective effort, a harmonious ensemble of minds working in perfect unison.

After 48 long hours of hacking, 3 teams emerged as major winners of the hackathon; Team Codec, Team Makossa, Team Hack’oholics.

Team Codec emerge as first winner, winning a cash prize of USD 1000. The Bantu Music App , team Codec solution emerged as one of the most promising solution to the challenges faced by Cameroonian artists, particularly in promoting their music and increasing record sales. To address these issues the app sets out to significantly enhance artists’ visibility, expand their reach, and ultimately boost their income.  It equally has the ability to connect artists directly with radio stations, TV stations, and DJs which creates a valuable networking opportunity, enabling artists to showcase their work to influential  figures in the music industry. This direct access can lead to increased airplay, TV appearances, and DJ support, significantly boosting artists’ exposure and popularity.

The app provides artists with a platform to promote upcoming events, sell tickets, and facilitate bookings by event planners. This functionality enables artists to take control of their event promotion and ticket sales, generating revenue from their performances and expanding their audience reach. The Bantu Music App is empowering artists to take control of their careers, enhance their visibility, and increase their financial earnings. In summary, the Bantu Music App addresses the challenges faced by Cameroonian artists, enabling them to overcome the limitations of traditional promotion methods and achieve greater success in the music industry.

Team Makossa’s solution, known as “Mutumbu” focused primarily on empowering independent artists and labels to achieve their music career goals. By providing a suite of comprehensive distribution, promotion, and marketing services, Mutumbu levels the playing field and enables independent artists to compete effectively in the music industry. Mutumbu’s centralized distribution platform streamlines the process of getting music onto popular streaming services and digital stores worldwide. 

This centralized approach eliminates the need for artists and labels to manage multiple distribution partners, saving time and effort while ensuring their music is widely accessible to listeners. Mutumbu equally simplifies the complex world of music rights management, providing artists and labels with a transparent and user-friendly system to track and manage their royalty payments and copyright ownership. This clarity and control empower artists to make informed decisions about their music and ensure they receive the financial compensation they deserve. Mutumbu offers a range of monetization options for artists and labels, providing multiple avenues to generate revenue from their music. This includes traditional streaming royalties, advertising partnerships, merchandise sales, and direct-to-fan engagement opportunities. By diversifying their revenue streams, artists can achieve greater financial stability and independence.

Team Hack’oholics solution called “Mutumbu” focused on active and effective fan engagement which is a key differentiator in the music streaming landscape. By fostering direct connections between artists and their fans, the platform creates a more intimate and engaging experience, encouraging loyalty and support for artists. This engagement can take various forms, such as exclusive content sharing, live chats, and fan-artist interactions, fostering a sense of community and belonging among fans. Mutumbu’s commitment to supporting artists goes beyond fan engagement. The platform provides artists with increased visibility and discoverability through various means, such as featured playlists, artist spotlights, and personalized recommendations. This increased exposure can lead to a wider audience reach and potential career opportunities for artists.

Moreover, Mutumbu offers artists monetization opportunities through revenue sharing, advertising partnerships, and merchandise sales. This financial support empowers artists to focus on their music and creativity while generating income from their work. Additionally, the platform provides artists with data insights into their audience demographics, listening patterns, and engagement metrics, enabling them to make informed decisions about their music production and promotion strategies. Team Hack’oholics emerged as third winners with a cash prize of USD400.
